How the Brain Reads

Participate in How the Brain Reads by clicking here (typically takes less than 10 minutes to complete).

You must be 18 years or older to participate.

Note to participants over 40 years old: Because aging affects how people do this task, we probably will not analyze data from participants over 40 years old (I know 41 is still young, but it really does make a difference). However, if you still want to see the experiment, you should feel free to participate.

About the Experiment: In this experiment, we are testing a relatively new hypothesis about how, on the brain system level, reading takes place. Although reading is an important topic that has been studied for many decades, there are still many questions about how people learn to read. One potential application of our research is the development of new methods of reading instruction for people with dyslexia. As usual, we can't say much about the purpose of this experiment before you do it because it might affect your results. However, the purpose will be explained to you when you finish.

A previous version of this experiment was available on our old website and has been in archival form here. The results from that experiment were inconclusive, so we are trying again with a different design.
